Masinagudi, part of the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, was my destination for the past weekend. This was my first visit to the place and couldn’t have asked for a better one. Had been there with family, but as always, birding was on the agenda, it always is…..isn’t it…. :)

The Mudumalai National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary, now also declared a Tiger Reserve, lies on the northwestern side of the Nilgiri Hills (Blue Mountains), in Nilgiri District, about 150 km (93 mi) north-west of Coimbatore in the westernmost part of Tamil Nadu, on the interstate boundaries with Karnataka and Kerala states in South India. Mudumalai, which means ‘first hills’, is one of the first wildlife sanctuaries established in India. The sanctuary is divided into 5 ranges - Masinagudi(in Karnataka), Thepakadu, Mudumalai, Kargudi and Nellakota.
We stayed at ‘Jungle Hut’, a beautiful place, with a nice little pond within the properties, actually two little ponds. Lovely and friendly people managing the place, with clean cottages and great food to go with it. Other facilities include, a great pool, with a great view, overlooking the Ooty hills, recreational facilities, like, movie room, where my daughter and other kids were watching some cartoon movies, and the usual games, like TT and others. A fantastic place to unwind……….
As, I mentioned, Birding was definitely high on the agenda for me, lots of opportunities for the same within the resort property itself. Also, with a resident Ornithologist, I did, jot out a plan of action, for the couple of days of my stay there…….., not everything went as planned though :)….., anyways, the nature walks were quite fruitful, with a lot of first timers for me.
An awesome getaway and a must visit for all nature lovers…………….
